Munday, Jeremy. Introducing Translation Studies. London: Routledge, 2001. Offset by Yalda Qalam.

(5-6 سوال)

(5-6 سوال)

Baker, M. (1998). Routledge Encyclopedia of Translation Studies. London & New York: Routledge.

 The Glove

R. U. Joyce

James Dunne, the ex-burglar, is now a respectful jeweler in Brampton, who is recognized by a prisoner. The latter keeps blackmailing him to the extent that he is unable to afford it. Feeling desperate, he breaks into Richard Strong’s house, robs his gold ornaments and is forced to kill him for his own safety. Returning home, James finds out that he has left one of his gloves in the murder scene. To find the glove, he goes back to the room where he has killed Mr. Strong with a knife. There, he finds Mr. Strong’s son waiting for him with a gun in his hand. On their way to the police station, he goes to his house to get an overcoat. To his astonishment, he finds the missing glov
e there.

The Doll’s house

Katherine Mansfield

Summary: An outline of the events portrayed in Katherine Mansfield's short story "The Doll's House," a satire about the two different worlds of adults and children and how they are separated from each other.

Katherine Mansfield's "The Dolls House" seems to be a simple story about children receiving an own ideas and opinions. Even though everyone is entitled to their own opinion it is often bizarre to see how our opinions are based on those of others. This essay will outline the events that occurred in the story which are a big part in regards to the two different worlds of adults and children, and how they are separated from each
other.

The Dolls House is a story where you can see the cruelty of children towards each other. This story is centered on the concept of three middle class girls who are given a beautiful doll's house as a present.

Mrs. Hay has given a doll's house to the Burnell children; it is minutely described, with especial emphasis on a lamp inside of it, which the youngest girl, Kezia, thinks is the best part of the doll house. The next morning they cannot wait to show it off to their school friends; Isabel bossily says she will be the one to decide who is allowed to come and see it in the house as she is the eldest. The Kelveys, two poor girls, Lil and "our" Else, will not be allowed to do so; Aunt Beryl talks Kezia out of letting them. Later, Isabel and two of her friends, Emmie Cole and Lena Logan, taunt the Kelveys about their low social status. Soon afterwards Kezia impulsively decides to show them the house an
yway; Aunt Beryl, worried about an insisting letter from a certain Willie Brent, walks in on them, shoos away the Kelveys, scolds Kezia, then feels better. The Kelveys have managed to see the lamp

Maupassant, Guy de

An Old Man

Monsieur Daron, an eighty-six-year-old-man, comes to live at the new spa in Rondelis. He believes himself to be in excellent health, as a result of "careful living." He has always had "an obsessive fear of death," and he avoids all pleasure because it may be dangerous.

In order to measure and monitor his own condition, M. Daron arranges for the doctor in charge of the springs to visit him once a week with information on the health of everyone else in the surrounding area who is over the age of eighty. When he hears that someone has died, he quickly identifies a cause that might have been avoided; the
man who died of pleurisy should not have gone out in the cold, and the one who died of dysentery must have eaten the wrong food.

Eventually, though, one old man dies for no apparent reason. The doctor can report no lesion, no disease: "He died because he died, that's all." M. Daron is horrified and asks the man's age. Eighty-nine. He laughs in relief, saying, "whatever it was, it wasn't old age . . . ."

Many people believe that translation is an easy thing and all you have to do is to change words from the source text into the equivalent words of a target text. However, this is not true since some phrases, if translated literaly, would make no sense. Translation is a very complicated process which has to consider many factors - the genre and the style of the original text, the translator's competence, the timeline allocated to the project and many more. There is a great number of useful translation tips available online and offline, yet every translator has their own reliable methods and techniques, built on expertise and time. Here, we summarized the most essential translation tips that can come in handy both for the oral translation and the written translation.

The translator Hala Salah El-din Hussein talks to Rania Khallaf about her work and her internet review

Hala Salah Eldin Hussein, 33, is a graduate of Tanta University and a professional translator. She is also the publisher of Albawtaka Review, one of the most promising independent cultural ventures in the field of translation today. Interviewing Hussein was an interesting and refreshing mission, and I came away with a sense of being uplifted by her inspiration and enthusiasm.

When did the idea of Albawtaka Review first come to your mind, and why did you feel it was necessary?

In December 2005 I read in Al Ahram a short article by the Egyptian novelist Youssef Zeidan. He wrote of how convenient the internet was for delivering news, and since I had been translating stories for about six months but failing considerably to get them published in magazines because they were so long, it hit me that the internet didn't count words or think in numbers and I could easily publish long stories to be delivered to people's inboxes in a matter of minutes. Of course I was so naïve I thought I could set up a website and design it all on my own; more importantly I thought, quite wrongly, that the whole thing would be a walk in the park. I set up the site after four arduous months of teaching myself design languages such as html and php. Canadian writer Alexi Zentner, one of Albawtaka Review's contributors, says it seems there is something to be said for the confident energy that naiveté can bring to a project. Albawtaka Review is the delightful product of such naiveté.

Or, more appropriately, a life in the day of a translator

Remember that old adage, never work with animals or children? This most fundamental advice of old clearly eluded me when I decided to go freelance along with two children, a dog and two cats. Phrases involving plans, mice and men feature strongly in my working day, with organisation flying out of the window along with the computer on occasion.

My typical day begins with a walk through the woods to school. Besides being a very serene start to the day not least for the dog, and especially if I have been at my desk since 5 am it has the additional benefit of allowing me to contra off any chocolate consumed during a sedentary days translation and also to mull over any headlines or anything else requiring quiet contemplation. I often use this time to give translations or editing a final read-through manic multi-tasker that I am

MA in Screen Translation

The innovative MA in Screen Translation offers students a unique opportunity to combine theory with practice in the fast growing field of screen translation. Our increasing use of audiovisual material in our daily lives has led to a huge surge in demand for screen translation in recent years.

The constraints of the audiovisual medium, which shape the practice of screen translation, make it a fascinating and rewarding area of study. On the MAST programme you will have the opportunity both to develop your translation skills and also to acquire new screen translation skills using industry standard subtitling software.

Themed screenings of International and European films are incorporated into the teaching of the MAST programme and you will have the opportunity to view a range of thought- provoking subtitled films at the University and also at the Showroom Cinema.

As a MAST student you will benefit from the strong partnership between MAST and Sheffield’s independent cinema the Showroom.

The MAST programme includes the following modules:

• The Theory and Practice of Subtitling and Dubbing
• Screen Translation of Literary Classics
• Subtitling Project

A combination of screen translation and translation modules are combined in this programme, which is designed both for students wanting to specialize in screen translation and also for practicing translators wishing to extend their range of skills.

Translation studies is an interdiscipline containing elements of social science and the humanities, dealing with the systematic study of the theory, the description and the application of translation, interpreting or both these activities.

Translation studies can be normative (prescribing rules for the application of these activities) or descriptive; a translation scholar that insisted upon this latter approach was Antoine Berman.

As an interdisciplinary discipline, translation studies borrows much from the different fields of study that support translation. These include comparative literature, computer science, history, linguistics, philology, philosophy, semiotics, terminology, and so forth. Note that occasionally in English, writers will use the term translatology to refer to translation studies. However, the term translation studies has become implanted in English, whereas in French, it is la traductologie that is used.

Set clear boundaries. Neighbors, friends, and family.

1. Maintain regular working hours and stick to them.

2. Get a separate phone line, computer and printer that are only used for your business.

3. Keep your workspace separate from your living space. Ideally it should be visually and acoustically separate from the living quarters.

4. To gauge your progress maintain goals and to do lists. On Sunday night or Monday morning create a plan for the week. At the end of the week take time to reflect on your progress.

5. Find other independent workers or a personal coach to give you feedback on your ideas and progress.

6. If you are working with a team, have frequent telephone and email conversations with the members of the team. This helps to keep the project on track and allows team members to anticipate and prepare for problems.

7. Document your work and learn to do this in laser like language.

8. Request frequent feedback from clients and managers so that you are sure you are satisfying their expectations continually. Without daily contact it is hard to read people. Most people find it difficult to give negative feedback. At the end of a project they may accept it as is even though they are disappointed with the result. Ongoing feedback helps avoid this problem.

9. Have regular breaks during your day. Be creative in you way of relaxing. Meditation, a cup of coffee, a snack, a walk, are examples of ways to stop what you are doing to re-energize.

10. Set clear boundaries. Neighbors, friends, and family must know that your office is off bounds. Even though you are home every day you are working. Have a no interruption policy during working hours.

Translators must be both bilingual and bicultural

The term 'culture' addresses three salient categories of human activity: the 'personal,' whereby we as individuals think and function as such; the 'collective,' whereby we function in a social context; and the 'expressive,' whereby society expresses itself.

Language is the only social institution without which no other social institution can function; it therefore underpins the three pillars upon which culture is built.

Translation, involving the transposition of thoughts expressed in one language by one social group into the appropriate expression of another group, entails a process of cultural de-coding, re-coding and en-coding. As cultures are increasingly brought into greater contact with one another, multicultural considerations are brought to bear to an ever-increasing degree. Now, how do all these changes influence us when we are trying to comprehend a text before finally translating it? We are not just dealing with words written in a certain time, space and sociopolitical situation; most importantly it is the "cultural" aspect of the text that we should take into account. The process of transfer, i.e., re-coding across cultures, should consequently allocate corresponding attributes vis-a-vis the target culture to ensure credibility in the eyes of the target reader.

Introduction

The nature and importance of translation

ranslation is ultimately a human activity which enables human beings to exchange ideas and thoughts regardless of the different tongues used. Al Wassety (2001) views the phenomenon of translation as a legitimate offspring of the phenomenon of language, since originally, when humans spread over the earth, their languages differed and they needed a means through which people speaking a certain language (tongue) would interact with others who spoke a different language.

Translation is, in Enani's (1997) view, a modern science at the interface of philosophy, linguistics, psychology, and sociology. Literary translation in particular is relevant to all these sciences, audio-visual arts, as well as cultural and intellectual studies.

First off, your heart alone can answer that. I can only map out a few questions and considerations for the two of you to meditate.

The next few paragraphs may amount to a tall order to someone straight out of university as well as to non-grads with all the right ingredients but give yourself a break because, if you’ve gotten this far, your heart headed you here and when you really want something and start doing something about getting there, you find allies along the way, along the same way that gives you time to fill in the blanks somehow or other.

Discard concern about conforming to a one-size-fits-all profile. Good translators may come in any size, shape and color: neurotic but idealistic language teachers, laid-off factory workers, ex-army commandos in from the cold, sharp disbarred lawyers, retired physicians and poetic alcoholics. We are all human. We all have both failings and the strengths that flourish from them: you are one of us to at least some extent.
